The split cross (also called the Friedrich's cross) design is at least 600 years old. In the 1970s, an American blacksmith, Christoph Friedrich, visited an ancient blacksmith shop in England. He participated in an archeological dig at the shop and discovered a cross that had been forged from a single piece of steel. After studying it, he was able to re- create it by splitting a steel bar with a chisel and opening it up. I have sped up the process with a band saw, the the steps remain the same. T
