Just after the sunset, this large band of Arizona Wild Horses trotted by me as I made it back to the car. According to Arizona state historical records, these beauties have been living on the Lower Salt River of Arizona since well before the Tonto National Forest was created in 1902, or Roosevelt Damed the river. Most date them to at least the 1700’s. Best guess is that they are descendants from Spanish missionary stockyards in late 17th century Sonora (now Arizona). | Jeremy Johnson Photography

There’s nothing quite like an Arizona sunset! Especially when you throw in some altocumulus clouds to scatter the low-angle light in the atmosphere after sunset. This is looking over downtown Phoenix and the East Valley from Pass Mountain in Mesa. Another Western Diamondback Rattlesnake relocated from a neighbor’s courtyard this morning. She had a monster rattle intact, and was extra defensive because she had eye caps / spectacles clouding her vision from an impending shed. | Jeremy Johnson Photography

Check out this western Diamondback Rattlesnake I came across on Saturday! He had an extra big intact rattle to let people know he’s there, but didn’t have to use it as he moseyed on by. | Jeremy Johnson Photography

This Vermillion Flycatcher was trying to get out of the much needed relentless rain we’ve been experiencing in central Arizona this weekend. Some Vermilion Flycatchers nay migrate over 600 miles from South America, but the ones you commonly see in Arizona are often non-migratory locals that stay all year. This guy and his lady friend have lived in this spot for at least 5 years! | Jeremy Johnson Photography

Such a fun / magical experience being inadvertently surrounded by swimming Wild Horses 10 miles from my driveway. Yes, for all those who like to scold, we did everything to avoid them. Prior to me hitting record, the dozen horses you see at the end sprinted into the water before both in front and behind us crossing the river. Fun day on the water… | Jeremy Johnson Photography

I ran this noodle’s tail over on my mountain bike last night, and she was of monster size too! I came around a corner, and couldn’t avoid the Western Diamondback Rattlesnake. | Jeremy Johnson Photography

The electrical show over the Superstition Mountains tonight was pretty spectacular! For scale, it’s over 4,000 vertical feet from the base to the top of the mountain range. Some of those lightning bolts are 10 miles long. | Jeremy Johnson Photography

The Arizona desert felt more like the fictional island in Jurassic Park. Turn your sound up and your blood pressure down as the clouds hung low on the Bulldog cliffs along the Lower Salt River. I’m blessed this spot is less than 10 miles from my home in the Phoenix suburbs! The Falcon 9 rocket launch was amazing over the Phoenix, AZ skyline. The launch originated from Vandenberg AFB on the California coast and deployed 28 Starlink satellites about an hour after launch into low Earth orbit. | Jeremy Johnson Photography

These Harris’s Hawks took off to roost for the night under the sunset afterglow in Arizona’s Tonto National Forest last night. They live and hunt communally in packs of up to 7 in our patch of the Sonoran Desert. Can anyone identify that beautiful bird call amthat begings about 15 seconds in?! This juvenile Red-tailed Hawk has already figured out that bird deterrents don’t work. The way she used these bird spikes on our neighbor’s wall to eat her breakfast made me chuckle extra loud… 😂 | Jeremy Johnson Photography

We live in bazar times, and I’m so glad these are friendly rockets in the skies over Phoenix! Tonight was another spectacular Falcon 9 rocket launch over the Pacific Ocean very visible over the lights of Phoenix, Arizona. The launch was first visible from behind Camelback Mountain and continued south carrying 26 Starlink satellites into low-Earth orbit. @SpaceX | Jeremy Johnson Photography

The lighting was perfect on these Arizona Wild Horses who were enjoying the low water levels, making the eelgrass accessible without much “snorkeling”. The 4 dams that feed the Lower Salt River turn their water release down to a trickle each fall when the power need is much lower with our beautiful winter weather. | Jeremy Johnson Photography

This nice sized Western Diamondback Rattlesnake was sunning herself across the trail Thursday. She was the 4th I’ve seen on the Arizona trails this week, and I’ve relocated 5 others for neighbors on top of that! It’s that time of year when they’re out looking for food after a short winter break… | Jeremy Johnson Photography

Yesterday finally had some tolerable summer weather in our ultra-dry Sonoran Desert. I ran into all sorts of wildlife, including this coyote running into the sunset, and a paraglider who thought it was a good idea to do wingovers above the active gun range… | Jeremy Johnson Photography

This Harris’s Hawk cleaned her beak and talons after finishing her Rabbit dinner. They are such fascinating creatures, as they are the only North American raptors that hunt in true cooperative packs, using teamwork to flush and corner prey in the Sonoran Desert. Their family groups rotate roles—scouts, chasers, and blockers—to run down animals that a single hawk couldn’t catch alone. We got a permit again this weekend to play in the 70°F water that gushes from Arizona’s Fossil Springs at 20,000 gallons per minute. Fossil Creek is the fourth largest producer of travertine in the United States, and 3 are in Arizona!! It forms so quickly that it can encase sticks, leaves, and even small branches in solid rock within just a few years—creating natural “petrified” shapes in real time. | Jeremy Johnson Photography
