Oklahoma City's first winter shelter is now open, the Homeless Alliance opened the shelter this month, offering people experiencing homelessness a place to stay overnight during the cold winter months when frigid temperatures can be life-threatening. The overnight shelter is only one block from the Homeless Alliance and is open to all seeking refuge from the cold seven nights a week until the end of March. The Point-In-Time count provides valuable data to help service providers understand how many local people are homeless and what needs they have. The count also allows for organizations to apply for U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development grants to help the homeless. This information aids in planning Oklahoma City’s services and programs to feed and shelter
