On June 11, Mara Elephant Project CEO Marc Goss had help from two honeymooners staying at Angama Mara dropping seedballs from SeedballsKenya onto an area in Nyakweri Forest that was devastated by charcoal production. These seedballs are African Olive (olea Africana) an indigenous species of seeds that are covered in charcoal and ready to take root as soon as a new rain comes along. The Mara Elephant Project “Foxtrot” ranger team rapidly responded to four rogue elephants, led by Individual 1, a well-known bull in the MEP database named Edwin, invading local farms. Their monitoring efforts help them to observe elephant location and behavior to more effectively mitigate conflict and report any suspected injuries for treatment.
