Operating with severely reduced rations and medical supplies, the combined Allied force managed to deal some 2,000 casualties against the Japanese while reporting 1,800 casualties from their own before the eventual surrender. The Japanese military, led by General Masaharu Homma, soon realized that Wainwright's call appeared
